Summary One Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) position is available in Moline, IL and one in Peoria, IL, in the Criminal Division. The duties include investigation and prosecution of a wide variety of federal criminal cases including violent crime, crimes against children, immigration, human trafficking, drugs, national security, firearms trafficking, and white‑collar crime. Pay ranges: Moline $81,000–$140,000 and Peoria $81,000–$145,000, inclusive of locality pay. The appointment is a 14‑month temporary position, subject to extension or conversion to permanent with no further competition. Duties and Responsibilities Assist in preparing statements, pleadings, discovery, and briefing materials. Participate in pre‑trial and trial proceedings as counsel for the United States, appearing before judges, juries, and witnesses. Collaborate with federal, state, local law enforcement, and related agencies. Responsibilities increase as experience grows. Security Requirements Initial appointment requires a satisfactory preemployment adjudication: fingerprinting, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment requires a favorable background investigation. Residency Requirements Applicants must reside in the Central District of Illinois or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district‑specific information. Selective Service Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must register with the Selective Service System or certify exemption. Qualifications Required: J.D. degree (or equivalent) and active membership in the bar of any U.S. jurisdiction; minimum 2 years post‑J.D. legal or relevant experience; superior oral and written communication; strong interpersonal skills; good judgment; ability to function with minimal guidance in a demanding environment. Preferred: Strong academic credentials, advocacy and research skills, precise articulation of case‑related issues, excellent interpersonal and ethical judgment. Salary and Benefits Pay is administratively determined based on years of professional attorney experience. The temporary position offers paid vacation, sick leave, telework, holidays, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System. Other Information Relocation expenses will not be authorized. Occasional travel may be required.
